How to use AncestryDNA to understand your Ethnicities

  1. Purchase an Ancestry DNA kit from the Ancestry website or a retailer.
  2. Register your DNA kit and create an Ancestry account on the Ancestry website.
  3. Follow the instructions provided in the kit to provide a DNA sample (usually saliva).
  4. Mail the kit back to Ancestry for processing.
  5. Once your results are ready, log in to your Ancestry account to view them.

Your results will include an ethnicity estimate, which shows the percentage breakdown of your genetic ethnicity based on Ancestry’s reference population samples. Ancestry’s algorithm compares your DNA to reference samples from around the world to estimate your ethnic makeup.

It’s important to note that ethnicity estimates from Ancestry DNA are based on statistical models and can change over time as Ancestry’s reference population samples evolve. Additionally, ethnicity estimates are not the same as a genealogical family tree and should not be taken as an absolute truth about your ancestry.
